Craddonia Mine, 1922 - A "modernized" Railmaster Exports 0-6-0 switcher (see the Spring-Summer 2002 issue of Sn3 Modeler for more details) and two Taurus ore cars standing in front of the power house and the sacking shed, as seen from beneath the Craddonia Mine ore tipple.

 

A general view of the Craddonia Mine - showing the end of the line trestle, the ore tipple, the tram line, the sacking shed, the power house and the water tank (built from a Diamond & Caldor original prototype). The mine itself is actually supposed to be hidden behind the top of the mountain. All these structures were scratch-built and inspired by the ones that actually existed in the 1920’s at the Dolly Varden Mine, in British Columbia.

Ore train at Craddonia – An HO Bachmann shay converted to Sn3 (by Peter McParlin), with a few loaded Taurus ore cars is (obviously!) ready to leave Craddonia.

The very end of the line – A Railmaster C –16 waiting at Craddonia Mine (No locomotive are allowed onto the trestle itself).

Tadpole Canyon and the aspen grove – Although we are supposed to be in the Pacific Northwest (where virtually no aspens grow), this scene was (partly) inspired by a most famous view of Animas Canyon, along the Durango & Silverton RR, in Colorado.

Kizilgoetian Logging & Mining Supplies – This structure was inspired by an Earl Small-shaw article in the Dec.,1974 Model Railroader. The uppermost floor was eliminated though, for the building not to be too overwhelming for its environment. The stone wall was made from a Blue Ribbon Models latex mold. The two trucks are Efsi models.

Crossing Pelletier Lake at Rapinett Falls – The Uintah-like brass articulated and the trestle bridge were scratch-built, and the cars are by PBL.

The Vladimirskaya Polyana logging camp – The Railmaster 0-6-0 switcher along the log-loading deck and a scratch-built steam donkey (see the Jan./Feb.2003 GAZETTE)

The Delaunière sawmill – An opposite view showing the log pond, the mill and the slash burner. The log car is a Triangle Scale kit. The sawmill was built from a famous Charles Swamberg article, in the Nov.1961 Model Railroader.

Smoke, speed and steam – Or how to make an interesting picture out of a mediocre original shot using Photoshop. The whole surroundings, the wheels and the valve gear were given either a “motion” or a “radial” blur, then smoke and steam were added to the locomotive.

Crossing Canuck Creek – This time, blur was added only to the stream, the bottom of the waterfall and the drivers and side rods, while the original, shaken cotton twig “smoke” was replaced by an even more fake one….).

Canuck Creek Station and the Refreshment House – These two structures were scratch built after those that stood by the C & S track at Forks Creek, in Colorado. The water tank was also scratch-built.

Trading Kok Spur grade – An ore train has just passed the Canuck Creek station and is headed to the ore dock, trading the 4-1/2% grade along Wheeler Canyon.

The Bandar Degulbeef Wharf – Fresh cut boards are being loaded into a barge while poachers are about to ship away to a dog food factory their illegal catch of local wildlife… The trawler is a 1/60 scale Lindberg kit. The wharf, the stiff-leg derrick, the barge and the Dolly Varden House-like buildings are scratch-built. As to the triceratops, it is a kitbashed protoceratops… (Tadpole Canyon and the aspen grove are visible in the background).

The ore dock – Inspired by the one that once stood near Alice Arm, on the Dolly Varden Mines Railway.

Bandar Degulbeef Landing, the Craddonia Mine and Tadpole Canyon – This panoramic view was made out of four original shots of the whole scene stitched together.

The Jack-in-the-Box – The author made this portrait of himself immerging out of an access hatch in his layout, located just behind the Kizilgoetian Supplies building.
